MARCO G TRATTORIA
This is the real deal.
Yes, the menu might read a bit like a tourist menu, but that is because these are all the original Roman pasta, meat and fish dishes. And they are very well made indeed.
We are lucky to have this just over the road (out through the garden street door: Via Statilia, 12) and it still uses pre-pandemic pricing - €20 to €30 a head according to your wine or pudding penchant
If there are a few of you it's worth booking first :-)
TRATTORIA VECCHIA ROMA
http://www.trattoriavecchiaroma.it/
Via Ferruccio, 12/b/c
Out the door, go right, down the hill, up the hill. keep going, you’ll get there eventually 10 mins
Pizzaaaaaaaaa
Hopelessly crowded pizza and pasta
but deservedly so
need to book

PINSA e BUOI dei...San Giovanni
Almost fine dining ....
A bit further away but worth the walk (7mins)
Viale Carlo Felice, 51/53
http://www.pinsaebuoiristorante.com
Out the front door on the other side of the courtyard
Right, down the road, left at the lights, up the road on your left
Pizza, Pinza and Pasta and a very welcoming atmosphere - old school vibe
LE FOODIE CAFE BISTROT

Breakfast Brunch Spot
Piazzale Appio 9
Just outside the walls after crossing infant os San Giovani cathedral.
Breakfast on the sunny terrace. Lots of options including your brunch favourites. Then back again for an aperitivo in the evening. 5 min walk up the street.
CASA DANTE
Morning Coffee, Aperitivo, Lunch & Dinner
Piazza Dante 8
Dust off your cool hipster look and head off to Esquilino's definitive café spot. Hey, the New York Times even ran a piece on them they are so cool.
Out the back door, down the road, over the road and up the road .... on the corner of Piazza Dante
Also a really nice outside sunny tables space
SANGIO' - L'ANTICO FORNO
Ristorante Pizzeria Bar
Piazza S.Giovanni in Laterano 26
Up on the San Giovanni piazza. Should be a tourist trap. But instead it has really good fresh bread and pizza. If you want to impress your fellow guests, nip out the back door, up the street, take a right into the piazza and there on your right you can stock up on fresh breakfast bread. Suddenly you will look like a local.
It also has a really popular restaurant, but I have yet to try it
BUSSARAKHAM Thai Restaurant
A fancy Thai Restaurant, and new Rome opening from the famous namesake in Milan
This place used an architect and an interior designer to create a very laid back ambiance. Thankfully they didn't save on the chef either. As well as lovely staff.
It is just out the main door on the left in Via Emanuele Filiberto. It's very tasty and creates a wonderful Thai vibe (definitely not for takeaways - you'd miss half of what you pay for). Your friends will thank you, your wallet will be a little less happy.
LE VIRTUE IN TAVOLA
Fish and Fun
Via Domenico Fontana, 28,
http://www.levirtuintavola.it/
Out the door, up the road, down on the left 2 mins
Fish and Sardinian - great for never ending antipasti, and fresh fish
Medium pice range
(depends on the wine you choose)
You can call Simone directly to book (he speaks good English) 00-39-3698361
Da DANILO
Real Roman food with Real Roman vibe
The food is amazing, the service can be hit and miss, but if your expectations are are for an authentic lunch or dinner in an old school trattoria with top quality food ... and you ain't in a hurry ... it's worth checking out.
Also check out how many of the VIPs you recognise in the wall to wall photos.

via Petrarca , 13 - 00185 Roma
About a 10 minute walk
SPACCIO PASTA
It's open and its nearby
Via Emanuele Filiberto 184
Sometimes you just need a meal and its not really meal time ... That's where Spaccio Pasta kicks in
It has a varied menu, and is pretty much always open. Possibly not the best meal you will have in Rome, but very welcome when you need it.
ANNAPOORNA Indian Restaurant
Sometimes you fancy something that isn't pasta ...
Via Emanuele Filiberto, 136,
The decor is pretty basic, but that's not why you go here. Probably the best Indian restaurant in Rome, permanently filled with visitors .... from India! But if you can get a seat you will enjoy a tasty Butter Chicken or sizzling samosa.
If you can't handle the bare bones decor you can always call in and order (check the menu on Facebook) and then send one of your group for the pick up while you prepare the ambiance on the terrace ... nice

Or just a light lunch in a trendy spot

TRATTORIA MONTI
Its kinda authentic-and-innovative take with focus on top level ingredients and great quirky wines.
You will almost definitely need to book - its small and very popular.

A remarkably good Chinese sit-down restaurant.
This is where my kids go when they want some tasty alternative to pasta. It's super popular, but they always seem to have space. And did I mention its cheap too?

PHO1 Vietnamese restaurant
Still need an alternative to pasta and pizza - these guys really know what they are doing. Super busy fast turnover but you can also take a pavement table and just watch the world go by as you slurp your pho and attempt to keep your shirt clean :-)
